Beach tennis 🎾

Beach tennis is one of the youngest beach sports in the world.

It originated in Italy in the 1980s and was initially just an unusual beach pastime. In July 1995, on the Italian coast of Marina di Ravenna, Renzo Fiorellini organized a tournament in memory of his son Marco. This tournament became the starting point for the development of beach tennis as a professional sport.

The example of Ravenna was followed in other regions of Italy, which initiated the development of the world’s first competitive system for beach tennis.

Beach tennis crossed the borders of its homeland in 2007 when the International Tennis Federation (ITF – International Tennis Federation) officially recognized it as a sport.

From this point, official European Championships were held under the aegis of ITF. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, the first three official World Championships were held on the beach courts of Foro Italico in Rome under the leadership of ITF.

Game Features

Beach tennis is played on a sand or gravel court measuring 16 meters long and 8 meters wide. A special ball is used, which is softer and smaller in diameter than a regular tennis ball.
